Rejection Therapy

What is your role in the selling process? How can you make time for sales support? How can you make the selling efforts more efficient and effective? What can you pick up to allow others to spend time selling? What did the team do to drive sales this week? Do some members of the team excel at selling more than others? If so, why?

Another critical art of becoming successful at sales, is being able to overcome your fear of rejection. An aspiring entrepreneur Jia Jiang embarked on a 100 day mission, video taping himself asking people for silly requests. As each person said NO, he developed an immunity to NO, and was no longer fearful of rejection.

Assignment Task:

Your assignment is to become more resilient. One of the habits that high-performing sales professionals and entrepreneurs develop is the ability to bounce back from rejection. So, go out and get rejected.

Your assignment is to compile a list of 10 challenges that you have dreamed up. Take a piece of paper and write the numbers 1-10 on the page. Now, think of 10 challenges that will result in certain rejection and write them on your checklist. Two examples might be asking a stranger if you can borrow $2,000 for a couple of months, or asking your local coffee shop if you can just slide behind the counter and make coffee for a few hours. These "asks" will result in a "no," and that’s the purpose of this exercise.

Rules for assignment

• You must ask for things that you are certain are unobtainable

• Do not ever lie to get what you want. This should go without saying, but to do so is unethical as well as just bad business. Do not ask for anything that is illegal.

• Do not promise favors or services that you cannot or will not be able to provide.

• COVID-19 caution. Because we need to practice social distance, you will need to be creative and practice social distancing. Normally, this assignment works best when you approach people you do not know. However, given COVOD-19, it is best for you to approach friends and family with your "asks" -- Keep your social distance, and use technology to complete the assignment.

When you have completed asking for the ten items on your list, write up a summary of this experience. How many people did you approach/speak with in total?, how many spoke with you? What did you ask? What were the responses? How did you feel doing this?  Summarize the experience. Post all of this to this canvas Assignment.
