Understanding who your customer is overview

Market segmentation and customer identification is the process of dividing an overall market into sets of consumers that have similar needs or similar characteristics. In simple terms, market segmentation means categorizing consumers into similar sets, where each group consists of consumers who are similar to each other in some way. One of the most critical steps of building a startup is being able to accurately identify if enough consumers exist that share your vision about solving a particular problem that you have identified. Not only must you be able to pinpoint whether there is a critical mass of customers that share your vision, but you also need to be able to define who those customers are, where they can be reached, and perhaps most importantly, whether they are willing to pay you for your solution, or if not, if customers of your product can be monetized in some other way, i.e. advertising.
